Flying with Monarch Airlines
ATTENTION: Please note that as of 2nd of October, Monarch Airlines has ceased operations. Customers will therefore not be able to book flights for this airline.
Monarch Airlines is a British airline which was founded back in 1967. The airline is owned by First Aviation Limited, of which Monarch Airlines is a trading name. It is a low-cost operator and is the oldest British airline to have never had a change of name. The company has its headquarters at London Luton Airport but also operates bases at a number of other UK locations, namely Birmingham, Leeds Bradford, London Gatwick and Manchester airports. Nearly 100 destinations in the Mediterranean, Aegean, Africa, the Near East and more are served by Monarch flights. Some of its top routes include flights to Lisbon, Madrid and Birmingham.
To operate its flights, Monarch Airlines maintains a fleet of more than 70 aircraft. It has codeshare agreements in place with Air France, Etihad Airways, KLM and British Airways, the UK's flag carrier. The company has not joined an airline alliance.
Online check-in
Online check-in is available for those looking to travel on Monarch flights. Passengers who paid for a specific seat when they booked their flight may check in online starting 28 days prior to their flight. Passengers who have not purchased a seat can check in from 24 hours ahead of departure, at which time their seat will be allocated for them. They can also pay extra to select their own seat. Passengers will need their booking reference number (which should have 6 characters) and the email they used to book in order to check in online. After checking in, passengers can print their boarding card.
Hand luggage allowance
Passengers are able to choose from two available options for hand luggage allowance on a Monarch flight. The first option is to take 1 item of hand luggage with a maximum size of 56 x 40 x 25 cm plus a maximum weight of 10 kg. The second option is to take 2 items of hand luggage in which the combined width, height and length of the 2 pieces does not exceed 56 x 40 x 25 cm, or have a combined weight of more than 10 kg. Hand luggage which does not conform to these allowances, either by weighing to much or being too large, will be charged a fee and checked into the aircraft's hold. Infants who will be sitting on an adult's lap have no hand luggage allowance. Infants with their own seat will receive an allowance.
Checked baggage policy
Passengers may purchase checked baggage allowance for their Monarch flights at any of 4 increments. They may choose to purchase 1 item up to 20 kg, 1 item up to 23 kg, 1 item up to 26 kg or 2 items with a combined weight up to 40 kg. No single item of luggage is allowed to weigh greater than 32 kg. Gold and Silver members of Monarch Airlines' Vantage Club receive increased luggage allowance. Sports equipment can be added to checked baggage allowance on a flight either at the time of booking or later on either online or by calling the company's customer service team. Passengers travelling with a young child under the age of 2 who already have a checked baggage allowance receive an additional 10 kg allowance for the infant. Strollers and car sears will also be carried free of charge. Passengers will face a charge if they go over their checked luggage allowance.
