Alitalia was founded in 1999 and has its headquarters and main hub in Rome, situated in Flumicino, and at the Leonardo da Vinci-Flumicino Airport respectively. It is Italy's national airline and flag carrier. Alitalia has numerous codeshare agreements with other airlines such as Air France, China Eastern Airlines, Etihad Airways, Air Berlin, Qantas and Aeroflot. Since 2009, it has been part of the SkyTeam alliance. The company had a low-cost subsidiary airline, Air One, which terminated its operations in 2014. In 2015, Etihad Airways took over a large stake of Alitalia.
The company has a fleet of more than 100 aircraft that fly to over 100 destinations around the world. Several Alitalia flights travel to French destinations including Nice, Paris and Montpellier. The airline also flies to a number of domestic Italian destinations such as Florence, Naples, Rome and Verona.
Passengers booked onto Alitalia flights are able to check in online. Online check-in is available from 2 days before the departure of the flight. To check in online, passengers must select their flight and print off their boarding pass. It is also possible to check in with a mobile device and store the boarding pass electronically.
When checking in online an Alitalia flight, passengers are able to choose an additional service such as more comfortable seats or an increased baggage allowance if they are so inclined. Disabled passengers are required to check in at the airport on the day of departure. This rule also applies to children who are not accompanied by an adult.
Alitalia passengers are allowed to take 1 free piece of hand baggage on board as long as it does not weigh more than 8 kg and does not exceed 55 x 35 x 25 cm. In addition, a personal item such as a handbag or laptop may be taken on board. Luggage that exceeds these limitations has the potential to be rejected and not allowed onboard.
Liquids are allowed to be brought onboard as part of a passenger's hand luggage as long as the total amount does not exceed 1 litre. None of the individual containers should be able to hold more than 100 ml and all containers must be placed in a sealed plastic bag when going through security.
The amount of hold luggage a passenger is allowed to take on board of an Alitalia flight depends on the type of ticket they have purchased and the route they are flying. Depending on the tariff, the weight may not exceed 23 kg or 32 kg, and the size of the luggage should be no more than 158 cm. This size is the total value of the height, width and depth.
Passengers who have booked a Light Fare ticket are able to add checked luggage to their flight for a fee. Sport equipment that does not exceed the 23 kg weight limit is treated as normal hold luggage. It is advisable for passengers to label their luggage with their name and address.
