Singapore Airlines was founded in 1947 and was originally known as Malayan Airways. It is the national airline of Singapore and is based at Singapore Changi Airport. From this hub, the airline flies to more than 60 destinations, with flights to Seoul, Tokyo and Melbourne among the most popular of its routes. It is particularly strong in Southeast Asian and Australian destinations (the so-called Kangaroo Route), but also flies to 6 different continents, covering 35 countries.
There are more than 100 planes in the Singapore Airlines fleet, most of which are Airbus aircraft plus a smaller amount Boeings. The company is known for frequently updating the aircraft in its fleet. It has codeshare agreements with many other airlines and is a member of the Star Alliance. Some of its codeshares are with Air Canada, Virgin Atlantic and JetBlue Airways. Singapore Airlines also operates the Silk Air, Scoot and Tiger Airways subsidiaries.
Online check-in
Starting 48 hours ahead of departure, passengers can check in online for their Singapore Airlines flight. This can be done either on a mobile or a web browser and will allow passengers to print their boarding card. To check in successfully will need either their ticket number or their booking reference as well as their last name. The latest that passengers can check in online is 2 hours before their flight time. Passengers can also check in at the airport, either at a Singapore Airlines desk or at a kiosk. Check-in at the airport closes 40 minutes before a flight leaves.
Hand luggage allowance
Passengers on Singapore Airlines flights need to ensure that their hand luggage has a combined length, width and height of no more than 115 cm. This size limit is in place regardless of ticket class. Economy or Premium Economy passengers can take 1 item of hand luggage on the plane only, while Business or First class passengers are able to take 2 items total. No single item of hand luggage on a Singapore Airlines flight may weigh more than 7 kg. Passengers may also take an additional item onto the plane with them, such as a handbag, laptop bag, camera or items purchased from duty-free. This additional item must be smaller than 40 x 30 x 10 cm. If the baggage item exceeds these limits it will be checked in and counted towards that allowance.
Checked baggage policy
On all Singapore Airlines flights except those to or from Brazil or the U.S., checked baggage allowances are defined by weight. Current stipulations dictate these weights as being up to 30 kg for Economy passengers, 35 kg for Premium Economy passengers, 40 kg for Business passengers and up to 50 kg for First class passengers. Infants are allowed up to 10 kg of checked baggage.
On flights to or from the U.S. or Brazil, the checked baggage allowances are defined by the number of pieces a passenger can take. All passengers may take 2 items of checked luggage, weighing 23 kg each for Economy and Premium Economy, or 32 kg each for First and Business class passengers. Sports equipment will be accepted as part of a passengers' checked baggage allowance. A fee will be applicable for any luggage exceeding the allowance.
