Germanwings was founded in 1997 and previously had its headquarters in Cologne, Germany. It was a low-cost airline owned by its parent company, Lufthansa, and in 2016 was merged with Eurowings, its sister company. Germanwings flights travelled to more than 80 destinations mainly in Europe with a fleet of over 60 aircraft. It also had various operating bases in German airports such as Hamburg Airport, Berlin Tegel Airport and Dsseldorf Airport.
Passengers could choose from several different types of fares when booking a Germanwings flight. The Basic tariff offered hand baggage only while the Best tariff included hold luggage as well as a snack and a drink on board the flight. Many of the Germanwings flights included Italian destinations such as Milan, Rome and Venice, plus Spanish destinations such as Barcelona, Bilbao and Ibiza. Greek destinations like Rhodes, Corfu and Athens were also regularly flown to, as were the Polish destinations of Krakow and Warsaw.
Online check-in is possible on Germanwings flights up to 72 hours prior to the flight departure. In order to check in online, passengers are required to enter their booking code as well as their surname. Passengers are able to check in online from a smartphone or tablet as well as a computer. Passenger's checking in online can print off their boarding pass and choose the seat that they would like to sit in. Alternatively, they can store their e-ticket on their mobile phone. By checking in online in advance passengers can save time by being able to avoid long queues at the airport.
